Art Underfoot

I am currently obsessing over tiles.  I must say I can only ever recall seeing "play it safe" tiles in my previous homes and the homes of my friends and family.   Tiles create personality and atmosphere in a space and I vote for more people to experiment with tiles in their homes.  Here are some of my favourites.

Jenn Porreca is a San Francisco based artist.  I love her art. There is something about some of the pieces that reminds me of one of my favourite artists, Gustav Kliimt. 

Ho Ryan Lee

I love the Arts.  And I love these overlapping images by Ho Ryan Lee. I hope you find them as intruiging as I do.  They're sexy, provocative and somewhat familiar.  No?



Diem Chau - Wow

Heard of Diem Chau? She is a Seattle based artist who really has a gift for detail.  Check out her latest carvings of crayons and pencils (which you can check out at Packer Gallery if you're in Chicago before 18 May).  You can see more of her brilliant work here on here site and blog.  Her work is super cute.



Yaz Bukey

Have you heard of Yaz Bukey?  Not the 1980's British Yazz.  I'm talking about the 2013 Parisian accessories designer.  Well if you haven't, check out her page here & her Fall 2013 collection "Murder She Wrote", it's (plexiglass) candy for the soul (and the body).

Happily Ever After?



I remember reading fairy tales as a child.  I must say, that other than the fascination I had with the evil stepmother/villain and the dresses and shoes that the Princess was decked out in, I wasn't really sold on the whole "happily every after" piece or the recurring theme of the Prince miraculously "saving" the Princess from all her woes.  I remained unconvinced by it all and in my late teens I bought myself a book of fairy tales with a twist.   When I recently came across the work of Dina Goldstein and her Fallen Princesses,  the photos resonated with the realist in me and I felt a sense of vindication (followed by mild sadness) that these Princesses got a dose of reality.  Is that dark?   Either way, Goldstein's photos give a view of what may happen (even to the prettiest Princess) the day after "happily ever after".   The pictures deal with reality and modern issues including cancer, addiction, obesity, vanity etc...    As it turns out, I was onto something, there is no such thing as fairy tales.

Burn Out

 

 

It has been a looooooooooooooooong week!  Whilst I'm feeling a bit like these matchstick men by Wolfgang Stiller, there is only two more days to get through before the weekend and I am pretty much counting down the hours!    These are pretty cool matchstick men though aren't they?  There's an exhibition of these matchstick men (called Burnout) at the moment in Zurich at Python Gallery (until 20 April 2013), so if you're lucky enough to be in Zurich in April, you can check out these burnt out dudes up close.

We are one week into March.  It's actually Art Month in Sydney.  I'm looking forrward to hitting some of the exhibitions around town (there are over 200) to help me get through the grief that has come with the end of Summer (though today looks like it's set to be a gorgeous day)!   There is no better reason to get off the couch on the weekend and mobilise.

Window Shade - Miranda July

I subscribed to the very first four issues of THE THING when it launched in 2007 (San Fran HQ).   Basically, instead of subscribing e.g. to a magazine, you subscribe to receiving an objet d'art - quarterly.  The objects, created by artists, incorporate text and are pretty exciting to receive - secretly wrapped in their brown package.   It is still going strong today and you can subscribe to the latest issues here.   The shade above is the object from the very first issue in 2007!
